Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-17-13  Shams: An amusing episode. Black manages a rare feat: he makes elementary opening mistakes in two different opening systems in the same game!

With <2...a6!?> Black chooses the O'Kelly variation. This move invites White to make a tiny error, by continuing with with the normal d2-d4 next (Moving the c-pawn is White's usual reply.)

But surprisingly for a game in the Georgian Championship, White walks into this and plays <3.d4?>. And even more surprisingly, Black declines to take advantage. It is very odd that a master would play the O'Kelly and not play in this line 5...e5 and 6...Bb4 when he is already equal to slightly better. Instead with <5...d6?> the game transposes into a Najdorf.

Maybe the PGN gets the move-order wrong, but that couldn't explain Black's next mistake, which again is pretty elementary. 8.Qc7 is necessary to keep tabs on c4; with <8...Nbd7? 9.Bc4!> theory says that White is getting too much activity. (Sample miniature: Keres vs Benko, 1959)

Black wasn't a bad player, though. Here he is slamming the door on Nezhmetdinov-- check out the position after Black's 17th! Nezhmetdinov vs A Blagidze, 1957
