Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-03-10  Nova: Belov seemed doomed right after he accepted the bishop sacrifice! ...g5 and ...f6 clearly did not help black as much as it hurt him. Is the bishop sacrifice considered sound? It sure seems like it is, but i wonder if black had a chance out....
Jun-09-12  screwdriver: Whether black has a way out or not after the bishop sacrifice on d5 is not a question for us mere mortals to answer, but for the almighty chess engines. I haven't upgraded since Fritz 7, so I'll let someone else tackle it. All I know is it cleared the e-file and the black king still wasn't castled.
Nov-27-17  woldsman: Belov couldn't afford to play 12..g5 and had to block with 12..Ne5. Shishkin won convincingly but 17 Rf6! was more direct as 17..Nf6: 18 Be5: Kf7 19 Bf6 Kf6 loses the Q to 20 Ne4+
Nov-27-17  woldsman: The winner of this game is Vladimir Shishkin who won the Leningrad Championship in 1960. Soltis (Soviet Chess, p.276) cites criticism of Shishkin in 1963 by the Soviet establishment for 'not doing socially useful work' - code for poor results.
