Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-21-11  bubuli55: would it make a difference if the Black R is behind a Q pawn?
Feb-22-11  Ed Bernal: This was supposed to be a drawn game. It was adjourned on white's 41st move, if I'm not mistaken. In my analysis during the game, I expected the sealed move which is 41. g4. My reply was Kf8 and I couldn't see any way for white to win. I analyzed it alone during the break and was satisfied with the result. The whole team was busy analyzing another teammate's game... I forgot whose game it was. When they were finished with that game, they asked about my game. I said I'm fine. They still wanted to see my game. I showed them my analysis. They thought it's okay but they wanted to look for more. They saw something with Kd8 but they missed a flaw in the line. I lost the game because of it!

Later during the game, my opponent asked why I didn't play Kf8. He said he would've played a couple of moves and would've offered the draw. I said, I know, but the team overrode my analysis.

It's a team tournament so you have to abide by the team decision. We ended up 16th place I think but would have placed a lot better had I drawn the game.

I got my first IM norm here. :)

Feb-22-11  Appaz: <Ed Bernal> Nice story. An illustrative anecdote from the life and pains of a chess player :)

OhioChessFan: 41...Kf8 42. f5 gxf5 43. gxf5 seems pretty obvious. Black looks to be in huge trouble. Is there a fortress involved?

OhioChessFan: I am shocked that my Fritz, at 18 plies, prefers 41..b4 slightly to 41...Kd8.

OhioChessFan: Sliding forward in the 41...b4 line, the point appears to be after b4/a5/a4/b3/axb, Black's Rook must abandon the c Pawn to capture the advanced b Pawn. The game looks pretty textbook drawish with no Queenside Pawns. That appears to make the King move a waste of a tempo. I'm not quite convinced that's the case, but am too tired to pursue it tonight.
