MissScarlett: This 19-move score is as it appears in <The Chess Monthly>, 1859, p185, but in the <Field> of June 11th 1859, p.486, Boden relying on <the few games which have as yet come to hand, in Transatlantic contemporaries>, gives a 20-move version, including: <13.Qh5+ g6>. This is no irrelevant interlude, because it permits White the option of Bf6, hitting both Rook and Queen, after <16...Qxe5>.

Given his connection with the magazine, <The Chess Monthly> would normally be considered definitive for Morphy's games, but can we find a contemporary American newspaper with the extra pair of moves?

MissScarlett: The <(New York) Spirit of the Times>, of May 21st 1859, carried the 20-move version:

As Morphy contributed the game with notes, it has reasonable claims to definitiveness.

Despite the editor's claim (Stanley? Marache?) that the game <will bear the closest analysis>, a correspondent pointed out a fortnight later that <17...Bc5> would parry the attack.

fredthebear: 17...Bc5 would be met by the fork 18.Bf6 and White is still better, but the checkmate is thwarted.

Extraordinary sacrificial performance by Morphy!!

Fine reporting <MissScarlett>!! That 13th move discrepancy is mysterious.

MissScarlett: The obvious answer would be that Fiske cut the move pair, mistakenly assuming they were superfluous. The level of Morphy's involvement in the editing of <The Chess Monthly> is open to question.
May-28-21  paulmorphy1969: in almost all books on Morphy no research has ever been done Maroczy, Macon Shibut and others limited themselves to copying lots of magazines or some available source and in all books there are always the same errors, I say this from experience I am writing a Morphy book corrected as much as possible a superhuman quest that takes years to complete, with anonymous player names, correct dates, correct games etc, and in all books there are exactly the same mistakes. It is always advisable to check the magazines and newspapers of the time, which is not an easy task.
