Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-04-11  mack: I'd somehow missed this tragedy from last year. Our Lawrence playing out of his skin against a top 100 player and coming unstuck at the very end. Must have hurt. <IMlday> -- Are you capable of an exegesis?

IMlday: The opening was theoretical but after 15..
Bxe5 I got well on top. After the game I was kicking myself for not playing 20.g4! with Qc3 coming and a big king-side attack. I'd missed 20..f5!? although it is pretty desperate and 23.Ne6! won instead of the quick, automatic and wrong 23.Re1? which let him consolidate. A draw seemed likely until the horrible 34.Qxe5?! trying to win his c-pawn but making his e-pawn and active King very strong. After time control at 40 he slowed way down and came up with the surprising 41..Nc3!? setting a fine trap which I fell into with the decisively bad 47.Bg8+? after which it was too late.
Jan-05-11  mack: <Imlday> Thank you. I'd been wondering about 23.Ne6. Just goes to show: take even a 2700ish player into the swamp and it's far from certain who's going to come out alive. Well played eh. Happy new year.
