Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-31-15  optimal play: 8.Be3 was a TN by Charlick in 1885

Maybe Amos Burn knew this game because he tried it against Blackburne four years later ( Burn vs Blackburne, 1889 ) but with the improvement of 9.Be2 instead of 9.Bd3

Alas, he had no better luck against the champion, losing in exactly the same number of moves!

Anyway, Charlick played ok up until about the 20th move -- that's when he started to lose it.

Nevertheless, he might still have managed a draw with 26.Rbe1 Rxc2 27.Na1 Rxc3 28.bxc3 Bb5 29.g3 Bxf1 30.Kxf1 =

But after 27...Bb5! he was toast.
