Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-16-11  naruto00122: 17.Ne4! even with the chess engine Houdini took a while to spot that brilliant move.
Aug-16-11  trnbg: Where's the win after 20....f6?

Phony Benoni: <trnbg> There is no mate after 20...f6. Gunsberg realized this, played the move, and Locock resigned. We have the wrong result. Here's the crosstable:

In the <British Chess Magazine> for 1888, p.484, Pollock indicates a brilliant win for White with 19.Nxg7!, but I haven't got time right now to post his analysis.

Aug-17-11  trnbg: <Phony Benoni> Thanks for the information. 19.Nxg7 seems to do the job after 19...Nxg7 20.Qh6, or 19...Kxg7 20.Qg3+ ...Kh8 21.Qh4. But black has the nasty reply 19...Bxf2+!?, with the idea of pinning the white Queen (20.Kxf2 or Qxf2 ...Qb6). Thereafter white cannot avoid the trade of Qs, and he's down an exchange, which he certainly can regain (Nxe6 and then Nd7+...), but this is not a clear win. Or did I miss something?

Phony Benoni: <trnbg> Pollock does consider 19...Bxf2+, but not 20...Qb6. Here's his analysis, if you're up to descriptive notation and Google Books:

Aug-17-11  DarthStapler: I'm sorry but I don't see the win after 18...gxf6
