Jan-21-11  hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening.
Jan-21-11  richardhanes: I'm not a fan of So but evidently you haven't seen a lot of his games yet. He certainly deserved credit on making it look too easy here !
Jan-21-11  PilosopoTasyo: <hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening.>at least he could make use of his advantage to victory. there are those who don't. please accept the fact that the kid is a great chess player, chinaman. look what's happening to your Li chao...two loses so far! going downhill at such an early age? give credit where the credit is due, chinaman. you should learn from <richardhanes> here!
Jan-21-11  jerry crus: yup with no coach , how easy for him to beat 2700 plus GM . Give credit where credit is due
Jan-22-11  e4e5formerly: << hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening.>>

Most of the time, Elite GMs only win when they get an advantage out of the opening against another elite GM. Kasparov always win due to his home prep, and home prep almost always deal with finding advantage on openings.

Jan-22-11  rafnoc22: for a kid which doesn't have any coach... its amazing he is able to pace with those hydra kind of GMs... look at Magnus Carlsen.. his coach is Kasparov plus hes genuis of the game made the kid at the top .. If Wesley So has that kinda great coach.. then its not impossible to rank even higher than MCArlsen.. am I right??????
Jan-22-11  Libispusher: With time running out on both players, <20…b5!> was a nifty resource which waylaid white’s attacking prospects stemming from a somewhat adventurous <14.f4!?> that steered the game towards unclear territory.
Jan-22-11  Jammer: hellopolgar is funny hahahaha

of course in any game you always have to find and work hard for an early lead to have a higher probability of a winning a game. it applies in any game not only in chess my friend.

Jan-22-11  hellopolgar: holy batman.

a 2650 player with legions of zealots.

Jan-22-11  e4e5formerly: <<hellopolgar: holy batman. a 2650 player with legions of zealots.>>

a 2650 17 year old who trains alone, with little support from sponsors and still has outstanding result against 2700s.

your reply is a manifestation that you now realize how flawed your argument is but you simply lack the courage to accept it. it's ok, just give your self some time and when you feel that you can be purely objective, go back to this thread and revisit your initial post.

Jan-23-11  hellopolgar: W.So has a legion of hardcore Filipino supporters who are willing to step up and defend him whenever possible simply due to the fact that he is "a 2650 17 year old who trains alone", it's definitely not because he is the only 2600+ GM of the Philippines or anything. I mean, even if Magnus Carlsen was Filipino, W.So would still have more fans because he is just so good, no pun intended.

Uhmm, focus hellopolgar, you need to focus on the original topic, you started this thread with a declaration that Wesley seems to only win when he gets an early lead in the opening. We simply pointed out how wrong that argument is and now you are trying to steer the discussion into something irrelevant and completely unrelated to your first post.

Going back to the topic, Do you realize why there are so many draws in elite GMs games? It is because the players are unable to get the lead in the opening. If they come out of the opening being equal, the chance of a draw becomes very high due to the fact that they are very good in the middle and end games and that they will always hold if given an equal position at that point. Again, these are the reasons why elite GMs are doing home prep.

Jan-23-11  e4e5formerly: Oh and by the way, you are right that if Carlsen was a Filipino then W. So would have more fans. This is because Carlsen would not have the same opportunities and exposure he currently enjoy if he was born and lived in the Philippines. He would definitely not be in 2800 right now. Bottomline is that both kids are extremely talented and the only difference is that they don't have the equal opportunity.
Jan-23-11  hellopolgar: <Oh and by the way, you are right that if Carlsen was a Filipino then W. So would have more fans.>

I rest my case.

Jan-24-11  FISCHERboy: <hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening.>

LOL. There's actually no wrong with your statement because an opening advantage, as attest by many top level GMs like Carlsen, will give you a higher chance of winning the game. But you should have exercised more caution in using the word "ONLY."

Jan-25-11  iking: <hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening.>

You are right man, but

Jul-14-11  herfyriyadh: hellopolgar: it seems that So can only win games where he gets an early advantage out of the opening. its a one way of winning......
May-06-14  Chris321: Players 2500 is good...2600's are fantastic...2700's amazing...2800's...good fantastic and amazing and awesome...2900's not born yet but Carlsen he busy walking up to that door to knock!...therefore you can see how good W.So is!... ;)
