That pawn is just toast.If black wants to defend it once more,white will attack it once more.If 34...Rf8,then 35.Re7 (see diagram 1) and that pawn is a goner.If 34...Rc7,then just 35.Re8# (see diagram 2).

  beenthere240: 28...e4 seemed at the time like a reasonable (altho desperate) attempt to activate his knight. As long as the white rook was on e3, it had no where to go. I think ...h5 was the stinker since it basically forced the g5-g6 sequence.
Mar-20-11  pericles of athens: Carlsen has played 6. d3 in the ruy lopez to win some great games in the past 6 months or year. I like d3, followed by a4. It's solid.
