Penguincw: And that f7 pawn falls.
Mar-18-11  fab4: <Penguincw: And that f7 pawn falls.>

Watching it live it was in the air for a while,as a motif...The superbly proud bishop on b3 .. with the uber active rooks.. an irresistible combination.

Very Fischeresque.

That pawn is just toast. If black wants to defend it once more, white will attack it once more.If 34...Rf8,then 35.Re7 (see diagram 1) and that pawn is a goner. If 34...Rc7,then just 35.Re8# (see diagram 2).

Mar-18-11  haydn20: Pretty severe punishment for 28...e4?
Premium Chessgames Member
beenthere240: 28...e4 seemed at the time like a reasonable (altho desperate) attempt to activate his knight. As long as the white rook was on e3, it had no where to go. I think ...h5 was the stinker since it basically forced the g5-g6 sequence.
Mar-20-11  pericles of athens: Carlsen has played 6. d3 in the ruy lopez to win some great games in the past 6 months or year. I like d3, followed by a4. It's solid.
