Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-23-11  Dr. Siggy: Here we have another good example of the use of the seldom played but rather intriguing 4. ♗f4 ♗g7 5. ♕a4+!? line against the Gruenfeld Defense.

It should be noted that this line seems to promise White a little more than "Lady Theory" believes, viz.: 5. ... ♗d7 (5. ... ♘c6? 6. e4! ) 6. ♕b3 ♘c6 (6. ... ♗c6? 7. e4! [Kevitz]) 7. e3 ♘a5 (7. ... dxc4 8. ♗xc4 0-0 9. ♗e2! ) 8. ♕b4 ♘xc4 (8. ... c6 9. cxd5! cxd5 10. ♘f3 0-0 11. ♘e5! ♗e6 12. ♗e2 ♖e8 13. 0-0 ) 9. ♗xc4! dxc4 10. ♕xb7, and now: (i) 10. ... ♕b8 11. ♕xb8+ ♖xb8 12. 0-0-0 ♖b7 13. ♗e5! 0-0 14. ♗xf6! ♗xf6 15. ♘ge2 ♖fb8 16. ♖d2 ♗c6 17. e4 Δ f4, g4, h4 ; or (ii) 10. ... c5 11. dxc5 ♕c8 12. ♕b4 ♘h5 (12. ... ♗e6?: see game) 13. ♘ge2 ♗c6 14. ♕xc4! ♗xg2 15. ♖g1 ♘xf4 16. ♘xf4 ♗f3 17. ♖g1 Δ b4, Tc1, a4 .
