GrahamClayton: Although an off-hand game, an impressive performance by the 17 year old Pritchard in defeating the current Women's world champion.

wwall: Vera, Vera good. It was a blast. At least that was the buzz around town. Also, give props to 4-time British Ladies' champ Agnes Bradley Stevenson (nee Lawson), who also had an impressive performance.

<wwall> I'm surprised to see humor in such poor taste from you, of all people?

Making a joke out of the V-1 Rocket (buzz bomb) that killed Vera Menchik during the Blitz.

  jessicafischerqueen:

<wwall> Then following this "joke" up with an equally inappropriate, and idiotic, joke about the death of Agnes Stevenson .

"Props" to her "performance"? She was killed in an airplane propeller accident.

Just wonderful Bill, just wonderful.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU.

fredthebear: Such punny word play fits right in on this site.

Perhaps Bill is so busy with his passion for chess that he's unaware that the rest of the uncivil social media world has been making war on White Males (and covering for the hair sniffing head honcho that cannot remember his own name much less his appointees), especially the rich and famous fellows.

It's Menchik's last game in this database.

<fredthebear> It's not that I don't understand your point on this:

<Such punny word play fits right in on this site.>

I do get your point, and I am one of the most inveterate, guilty, and least skilled punsters around. I'm addicted.

I'm wondering if you fully understand my point?

There's a time and a place. The deaths of both of these women was tragic and uniquely horrifying. Not fodder for punny humor or any humor for that matter- and even if it were, their own player profiles would not be the place to make these jokes.

Do you think it's ok to do that? Should you and I organize a pun contest to see who can make the most funny jokes on the Jessie Gilbert page, or the Arvid Kubbel, or the Vladimir Petrov page?

We punsters could really have a laugh riot eh?

fredthebear: You are right to elevate the dignity of life and death <jfq>.

Yet, I'm confident that wwall was creatively striving to entertain, much like a stand-up comedian who crossed the line of decency. (That's most of what television does, eh?) We've all made "naughty" comments from time to time attempting to be humorous. Gee whiz, I'm a bear pretending to be human! How ridiculous does it get?

It's best to take the high road approach (at the risk of being too formal). Over Easter weekend, I traveled and visited a dozen family graves, some of who were veterans who fought in the World Wars & Vietnam. Most in our family remembers and honors the dead. Those who came before us deserve our respect.

Otherwise, it's pretty much anything goes on this site, including insults, belittling, and profanity. Puns rip a person's name to shreds. The top poster routinely crosses the line on a daily basis. He's interacting. Where to draw the line?

wwall is not a person that attacks others to elevate his own ego -- just being a creative wordsmith this time. He's probably one of the classiest people on this site.

So, I'm not really taking sides, just pointing out the huge difference in perceptions. I can also say for certainty that the time of day affects a person's self-restraint according to their bio-rhythms or BAC.

<fredthebear> I agree that Bill Wall is generally one of the more kind and valuable posters at cg.com. I doubt I would have reacted so angrily if this hadn't been the case- I couldn't believe Bill would make such a gaffe in the first place.

Also I think you are on to something with the <BAC> point. Just reviewing my own (often sorry) posting history, I think BAC has influenced many of my worst temper tantrums. In addition, there are many other stressors as well that can trigger a lapse in judgement.

Anyways that's not meant to exempt myself from my many egregious errors of judgment at cg.com over the years.

These "death puns on the player's home page" are most certainly an egregious error of judgment, but Bill deserves consideration based on his long record as one of the most valuable, helpful and considerate kibbutzers.

Seems to enjoy special status, but can be viewed similarly.

fredthebear: Be careful <OCF>. It's easy to point fingers at others, and abuse the power of volunteer editor. Your 44,000 posts aren't all so sincere or virtuous.

This site needed cleaning out years ago. It has lost a lot of good people because the commentary is often disgusting and belittling, which keeps shallow, disgusting and belittling people hanging around.

Apr-29-21  optimal play: How long after a tragedy is it okay to joke about it?

They say "Humour is tragedy plus time", but how much time?

I suppose it depends on the tragedy.
