Jan-25-23 | | Brenin: 20 ... Qe3 makes a nice finish, e.g. 21 Nd2 Bc5 22 Kg2 Qf2+ 23 Kh3 Re2 24 Nf3 Qg2+ 25 Kg4 Rf2. However, Black missed a quicker finish with 18 ... Re1+, e.g. 19 Kxe1 Bb4+ 20 axb4 Qxd5. |
|
Jan-25-23 | | Mayankk: I saw the potential of 20 ...Qe3 and how 21 Qxd6 Qf3+ Kg1 22 Re1# leads to immediate ruin. However I spent some time figuring out what to do if 20 ... Qe3 21 Nd2 Bc5 22 Qg2. I then saw the rather obvious 22 ... Qd3+ 23 Qe2 Qxe2# and was satisfied that there are no complex side-lines. |
|
Jan-25-23 | | jrredfield: I chose 20 ... Bxf4, thinking to further decimate White's King safety and get something in return for losing the Bishop. Not a bad move: 21 gxf4 Rd8 22 Qc4 Rd1+ 23 Ke2 Rd4 24 Qc8+ Rd8 25 Qc3, giving White about a 4 to 5 pawn advantage. However, the two moves <mel gibson> analyzed are superior. Black has several other paths to victory, or at least somewhat of an edge: Bb8, Rd8, Bf8, seems like Black can't go wrong. |

Jan-25-23 | | BxChess: I went with 20...Rd8, and was relieved to see that <Mel Gibson's> SF analysis also prefers it. |

Jan-25-23 | | Mayankk: Hi <Brenin>
After 20 ... Qe3 21 Nd2 Bc5 22 Kg2 Qf2+ 23 Kh3 Re2 24 Nf3 Qg2+ 25 Kg4, 25 ... Rf2 may run into 26 Qxc5 Qxf3+ 27 Kh3 when White has to guard against back-rank threats. Instead 25 ... h5+ forces the White King to move out of g4-h3 hiding space and then either Qh3+ or Be7+ leads to an easier mate I think. |
|
Jan-25-23 | | Allderdice83: I saw 20 ... Qe3, but then after 21 Qxd6?? incredibly I came up with 21 ... Qe1+. Amazingly, it still works: 22 Kg2 Re2+ 23 Kh3 Qf1+ 24 Kg4 h5+ 25 Kg5 Qh3 26 Qd8+ (or Qb8+) Kh7 and Qg4# is coming. Alternatively, 25. Kxh5 Qh3+ 26. Kg5 f6+ 27. Kg6 Qg4#
24. Kh4 Rxh2+ 25 Kg4 Qe2+ followed by Rh5#
Other lines are similar. |
|
Jan-25-23 | | Brenin: Thanks, <Mayankk>. 25 ... h5+ can be answered with 26 Qxh5, and Black is running out of attack. After 25 ... Rf2 26 Qxc5 Qxf3+ 27 Kh3, I think that 27 ... Qg2+ wins, e.g. 28 Kh4 Qxh2+ 29 Kg4 g6, avoiding the back-rank mate and threatening h5+, or 28 Kg4 h5+ 29 Kf5 Re2, with Qe4+ and Qh3+ both threatened. |

Jan-25-23 | | saturn2: Two white pieces are useless in the corner. First instinct was 20. ..Qe3 21.Qxd6 Qf3 But 21.Nd2 is more complicated. I also looked at the the tame 20....Rc8 threatening Rc1 and Rc5 winning a pawn. But this cannot be a puzzle move. |

|
Jan-25-23 | | TheaN: It's kind of obvious Black can play <20....Qe3!> without penalty: the point being the text 21.Qxd6? Qf3+ 22.Kg1 Re1#. Instead, 21.Qd2 Qf3+ 22.Qf2 (Kg1 Bc5+ #1) Qd1+ 23.Kg2 Re2 -+, and the more logical <21.Nd2 Bc5 22.Kg2> looks is terrible: I hadn't really analyzed it, but Black improved the position and is winning after <22....Qf2+ -+>. |

Jan-25-23 | | Allderdice83: <After 20 ... Qe3 21 Nd2 Bc5 22 Kg2 Qf2+ 23 Kh3 Re2 24 Nf3 Qg2+ 25 Kg4, 25 ... Rf2 may run into 26 Qxc5 Qxf3+ 27 Kh3 when White has to guard against back-rank threats. Instead 25 ... h5+ forces the White King to move out of g4-h3 hiding space and then either Qh3+ or Be7+ leads to an easier mate I think.> 25 ... Rf2 is fine. After 26 Qxc5 in the above line, there is 26 ... h5+ 27. Qxh5 Qxf3+ 28. Kh4 Rxh2+ or 28. Kg5 f6+. More dangerous is 26. Re1 Qxf3+!
(not 26 ... h5+?? 27. Kh4 Qxf3?? 28. Re8+ Kh7 29. Qf5+ g6 30. Qxf7+ Kh6 31. Rh8#) 27 Qxf3 h5+ 28. Kxh5 Rxf3 with a winning endgame. |

Jan-26-23 | | Halldor: My first guess was 20 Rd8, but quickly abandoned it as I couldn't find a forced continuation. — Then I saw 20.Qe3, and after seeing that White can't take the bishop — it's an instant curtain, I was convinced I was on the right track. I examined 21 Nd2 / Ra2 / Qd2. It was fun and leads to mate in many lines I thought, at least great attack from Black. — Sadly Fishbein didn't play any of that which would have allowed fireworks from Black to entertain the crowd. |
