Dec-17-11  syracrophy: A great mating pattern was produced at the closing move 34...♕h4+!! after the losing 34.♔g3??

If 35.♔xh4 ♗f2# it's a cute lone-bishop mate! And declining the ♕ is not much better after the short prosecution of the ♔: 35.♔f3 ♕f2+ 36.♔e3 ♕xf3#, and the most tenacious 35.♔h2 also loses brilliantly to 35...♕f2+ 36.♕g2 ♗xf4+ 37.♔h1 ♕e1+ <also 37...Bc6! directly works> 38.♕g1 ♗c6# it's a beautiful mate with both bishops

A similar mating pattern took place in the game Ulf Andersson vs Hartston, 1972 in which, the poor swedish master loses to 36...♕h3+!! after the greedy 36.♕xc7??

Dec-17-11  Gilmoy: <27.g4> creates the pawn skeleton for this rare pattern, but Black either doesn't see it yet, or deems it infeasible. <28..Bc5> offers to relieve pressure, just to hold a draw.

After <30.Bc7?!> Black sees the entire sequence. <30..Ba7> is surely a diabolical trap to lure White's knee-jerk <31.Bd6> -- just too tempting. a7 is simply the only free square available on that diagonal. Given that Black needed to decoy the Bc7 away from d8, Black's 3 moves were minimal to create the mating net.

Cute point: Black gets <31..Qd8> a "free" tempo to set up the sting by seeming to retreat there. White counts it as his progress in kicking her <away>, and blinds himself to Black's progress in <retreating her toward>!!
