Penguincw: Van Wely, once again holding the draw. Tomorrow he has white against Giri, who just beat Gelfand today.
Jan-20-12  pericles of athens: what do you guys think about 18. Rd2? it allows the queen and LSB to be forked.

maybe 18...Re1, and then if 19.cxd, white loses a pawn but the c-file is opened up for Rac1 to hammer away at the open file.

i'll engine check when i get home.

Jan-21-12  rilkefan: <<pericles of athens>: what do you guys think about 18. Rd2>

Looks to me like ...Ne5 isn't a big deal. I don't see Re1 as holding the center after ...cxd4. I would instead have been tempted by 18.Rc1.

For what it's worth, after a quick check stockfish likes 18.Rd2 at the half-pawn level, though Rc1 is also good for white. It thinks ...Ne5 was a blunder - just 21.Nf3 with maybe Re1 to come would be +2.

Jan-21-12  rilkefan: SF thinks white threw away most of the win starting with move 36 up through the time control - 36.Nd3 was +4, with white cleaning up the pawns.
Jan-22-12  pericles of athens: <rilkefan> you are correct. i checked the position with fritz. ...Ne5 was indeed a blunder, and Rd2 was best.
