Anderssen vs Falkbeer, 1851

30...Rd3+?

Black’s king is now susceptible to a back-rank mate.

His knight is under direct attack from the pawn at g5, so moving his rook off the 8th rank is dangerous.

31.Re3?

If instead, white played 31.Kg2 keeping his rook alive, black could have found himself in serious trouble.

39.Nf6+?!

42.Kxh7?? Instead 42.h5 wins!

There’s no way black could have successfully defended against the f-g-h pawn-storm.
