Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-01-12  Darek: Wow Insane game :D
Jul-01-12  Shams: Haessel's first win over a GM? It's great to see the local "mere masters" punching back. This gambit line has wide scope for creative play. Great stuff here.
Jul-01-12  Eyal: What an awful position for Black after his 21st & 22nd moves; from there onwards it's basically lost. Haessel could have shortened the game at several points, though, most notably with 24.Bc7! Qc6 (taking the bishop loses the queen to a knight fork; 24...Qa7 25.Nxe6+ followed by e5, aiming for Bg6+) 25.Nd4 & e5.
Jul-01-12  Edmontonchessclub: <Shams>
Haessel has beaten three GM's before, including this win over the 4-time US Champion GM Shabalov: Shabalov vs D Haessel, 2006

He also beat GM Leonid Shamkovich and one other GM who I can't remember at the moment.

Jul-01-12  PhilFeeley: What a wild game! I'd like to see the analyzers take on this one. Send it to Daniel King!
Jul-02-12  Edmontonchessclub: Bah, I posted the wrong Shabalov-Haessel game below. The one where Haessel won is from the 2005 Canadian Open. The night before the game, Shabalov came with me over to my friend's house, and we drank a bit too much while playing board games (not chess). Shabalov briefly pulled out his laptop and said "Ok, what does this Haessel guy play. Najdorf...Najdorf...Najdorf. Well, I'll play some moves and beat him somehow". Didn't work.
Jul-02-12  Shams: <Edmontonchessclub>

That's a hilarious story. Here's that game from the 2005 Canadian Open:

What the heck were you guys drinking? Shabalov played 1.d4 and lost in 23 moves.

Jul-02-12  weisyschwarz: Except for the resignation at the end, this looks like a primitive computer v. computer game.
Jul-08-12  Edmontonchessclub: <Shams>. I had Tuborg beer. Shabba may have tried something else, but he didn't inhale. Or maybe he forgot to exhale. It was so long ago.
