fredthebear: According to CJS Purdy, approximately 20% of all moves in a typical chess game are captures. We must examine what happens AFTER a capture-recapture sequence.

It can be wise to initiate "equal" exchanges. So often, there is no follow-up check like this game, but other factors occur as a result of the trade such as a battery is broken up, free squares become available for occupation, another piece is forced to return to a passive defensive position, the king loses the right to castle, the recapturing pawn is isolated, etc. Chess is a game of give and take positionally as well as tactics.
