Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-23-13  goodevans: The engines picked up a possibility that Liren seems to have "missed" with <22.Bxc4 bxc4; 23.Qh5>.

You have to be able to look 12 moves ahead in variations that aren't fully forced in order to reach a clear advantage for white. Engines are superior in that sort of situation and I would hazard that Liren chose against this line (rather than "missing" it) because he wasn't sure of all the complexities.

One possible line: 23...f6 24.Ng6 Re8 25.Qh8+ Kf7 26.Ne5+ Rxe5 27.Bxe5 Nd7 28.Qh5+ Ke7 29.Bxf6+ Nxf6 30.Qxg5 Qe6 31.d5 Qb6+ 32.Rf2 Bd7 33.Qg7+ Kd8 34.Qxf6+

Feb-23-13  DcGentle: <goodevans>: You got that right! :-) Only it's more than just advantage only.

Instead 32. Rf2 I would continue with
32. Kh1 Kf7 33. Qh6 a5 34. Qh7+ Kf8 35. Rce1 Ra6 36. Rxe4 Qb7 37. Qh8+ Kf7 38. Qe8+ Kg7 39. Re7+ Qxe7 40. Qxe7+ Kg6 41. d6 Nh7 42. Rf7 Ra7 43. Qxa7 Nf6 44. Qe7 Ng4 45. Rf8 Nf2+ 46. Kg1 Nh3+ 47. gxh3 Bxh3 48. Rf6+ Kg5 49. Qg7+ Kh4 50. Rh6#

Black of course would have resigned at <39. Re7+> if not earlier. The whole sequence is rather complex and contains a lot of sacrifices and pins. Chess as Chess can, but without the engines really hard to see, you are right. They are tactical monsters, and can shine here. In other positions, when ir's about positional chess, they can be clueless.

Here the whole line as PGN:
