wwall: This was part of a 6 game blindfold exhibition at the Dundee Chess Congress in September, 1867. Steinitz won 3 (including this game) and drew 3.

13...f5 was the losing move, which allowed 14.exf6 gxf6 15.Qh5 (threatening 16.Qxh7 mate) 15...f5, and now Steinitz could have played 16.Rf3 (threatening 17.Rg3+) 16...Rf7 17.Qh6 (to prevent 17...Rg7) 17...Ng6 18.Rg3, with an easy win and the threat of 19.Rxg6+ hxg6 20.Qh8 mate.

MissScarlett: <F.Lindsay is more likely W.A. Lindsay as the year fits (albeit Lindsay was from England). F.Lindsay looks like one of those database errors that attach initials (or names) to players who played in an entirely different era.>

Steinitz vs P Sandeman, 1867 (kibitz #3)

This is <David Lindsay> as given by the <Dundee Advertiser> of February 20th 1867, p.3. His name appears on other occasions as a member of the Dundee CC.

fredthebear: After 24...RxRe7 25.Qxd5+ repositions the White queen for more material gain. It would be fatal for the Black king to flee to the back rank, as 25...Kc8/Ke8 26.Rg8+ mates.
