Oct-25-13  DiscoJew: What a pounding! We have an offbeat Winawer French from Glek, who outplayed Najer positionally out of the opening, and converted to a winning middlegame-ending with no trouble. Nice upset, even if only blitz.

Domdaniel: Glek's 5...Bf8, as a response to 6.Qg4, is not so offbeat. John Watson discusses it in 'Dangerous Weapons: the French' along with the Frankfurt Variation of the Classical French: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Ng8, plus the rarer 4.e5 Ng8.

What's truly offbeat here is Najer's 6.Qd1, which gives Black a free gift of a whole move, despite his Bishop retreat.

Of course, both players try to show that tempi are not so crucial with the French pawn structure.
