Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-18-14  Karpova: This is one of three games from an article by Josef Emil Krejcik <Ein Beitrag zum Schweizergambit> (begins on page 155), wherein he critically discusses the Swiss Gambit invented by Alexander Wagner of Ivano-Frankivsk.

Adolf Albin suggests 4...g6 to question the correctness of the Gambit, and this is also the variation examined in this game. There is not much information on the game, so it is possible that these games were played for the purpose of examining the Gambit, but they could have been serious or offhand games either.

Here are the annotations, probably by Krejcik, condensed:

9...Qxd8+ <Appears weaker than 9.Nxe4.>

14.Bd5 <To prevent the ♗ trade.>

18.Nd4 <The game became very lively.>

20.Nxe6+ <A grave mistake. Better was 20.c3 e5 21.Ne6+ although this looks lost also. White would have had to play differently earlier on: 19.Ne6+ Nxe6 20.Bxe6 Bxc1 21.Bxd7 Bxg5 22.Rd1 with drawing chances despite the minus-♙.>
