Aug-04-14  mistreaver: This is a fantastic game, probably one of Topalov's best. Amazing instance of total positional domination, black is virtually stalemated from move 19.
Aug-04-14  fisayo123: Amazing play by Topalov! I stopped following this game on the live feed, boy did I miss out. Sac after sac after sac, 18.Qxf5!!, Topalov isn't afraid to sac his queen even though it's not immediately obvious how he is going to seize the initiative. No mercy against his friend, Paco. I hope to see this Topalov in Siquenfeld cup.
Aug-04-14  newzild: A fine game by Topalov, but in my opinion 18. Qxf5 is not quite so amazing as has been suggested, as White gets full material compensation (Rook, minor piece and pawn) plus the initiative.

JointheArmy: Now this is a true queen sacrifice. Is Topalov back?
Aug-04-14  Whitehat1963: Pretty amazing game. Topalov at his typical, tactical best!

Aug-04-14  notyetagm: Topalov vs Vallejo-Pons, 2014

Wow, what a *fantastic* game by Topalov. He was a simply unbelievable understanding of <MATERIAL IMBALANCES>.

  Sally Simpson: Hi notyetagm,

Thanks for the heads up to this game from the main Olympiad thread to here. I've been skipping though games by players I've never heard of and this slip by.

This is a cracker.

Cannot believe newzild saying it is not amazing - I suppose beauty is in the eye of beholder and all the guff. (Probably a relation of Kramnik.) :)

Playing through it and I stopped dead here.

Topo played 25.Bg3.

"What he's up to here...." Usually I can sing along with the player in this type of position. Tricks and traps a plenty.

It all fell into place 5 moves later when Topalov played 30. Kh2. He stopping mid-stream to give his King luft! That never dawned on me.

Looks like I was two or three pages behind on the song sheet.

Well off to bed, it's 04.45 am here. I've saved the game, I won't be back on this page as no doubt some gumboil will have run it through a box and looking for bum notes.

Thanks again notyetagm, hope one day you can change your name to 'nowIamaGM'.

Aug-05-14  Sokrates: This is a game conducted in the grande scale by Topalov. Nice to see such a game from him again. He has dwelled too long in the shadows - this game makes him shine again.
Aug-05-14  fgh: <Cannot believe newzild saying it is not amazing - I suppose beauty is in the eye of beholder and all the guff. (Probably a relation of Kramnik.) :)>

He said that it's "not quite so amazing as has been suggested." Stop making up stuff.

Aug-05-14  luzhin: 37.c6! works because after Bxc6 38.Nd4 Qc4 38.Re6+ wins the Bishop.
Aug-05-14  Beholder: <Sally Simpson: I suppose beauty is in the eye of beholder>

Damn right it is. Beauty is in my eye ONLY.

Aug-05-14  A7md3bedo: Topalov is one of the best players who can manage to play combinations very well
Aug-05-14  waustad: The play of an in form Topalov has always been great fun. His rebound after the funk he seemed to go into after his loss to Anand has enriched the chess world with some truly entertaining games.

Penguincw: Nice to see Topalov, probably my favourite chess player, still having his strengths. Here, Topalov deploys 2 pseudo sacrifices: a queen sac and an exchange sac (on move 26). Simply amazing.
Aug-05-14  Minitray: Very nice game by Topa.

All over by this point but that's zugzwang for black, as I understand it anyway.

And tactical players like Topalov around his age who don't *really* care about rating points anymore are more likely to play like this in a team game than when $$ prizes are involved in tournaments. Imo of course. ✌

Aug-05-14  dehanne: Topzilla.
Aug-05-14  Kinghunt: Amazing game by Topalov. This has to make his top games list.
Aug-06-14  Ed Frank: Nice to still see Topalov deploying wizard-like tactical strikes. Awesome game.
Aug-11-14  notyetagm: Topalov vs Vallejo-Pons, 2014

<Kinghunt: Amazing game by Topalov. This has to make his top games list.>

Yes, this is one of Topalov's all-time best games. Especially since he was playing against a 2700-strength player.

Aug-11-14  posoo: now dis - DIS - is a scorcher of a game. GOD BLESS da toplove, and cognrats on an excellent idea.

To be perfectly honest, I'd have played QxF4 in an instant (I only play BLITZ) not seeing dat i'd get trapped next move!

THEN however I think I'd be able to gobble up da material and do nearly as well as tupple in a slow-roasting barnburner.

YOURE SO SLOW, I have to play you FAST!

Aug-11-14  Marmot PFL: Topalov beat Vallejo-Pons, Vallejo-Pons beat Kramnik, and Kramnik beat Topalov.
Aug-12-14  visayanbraindoctor: This could be the best game in the Olympiad. A genuine tactical brilliancy.

Stylistically Topalov is of the same line as Alekhine, Tal, and Kasparov. These people just can't help it; somehow they just keep on producing these tactical masterpieces.

Aug-19-14  drtombari: this has to be topalov's immortal game
