Tabanus: Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, 3 Sept 1890, p. 6:

<The commencement of the day's play, yesterday morning, when tbe 12th round was to be proceeded with, was marked a particularly unpleasant incident. Messrs. Blackburne and Gunsberg, who are not on good terms with Mr. Hoffer, the secretary of the 8.C.A., considered his action of the previous day in marking a win for Tarrasch against Gunston on the ground that Gunston had exceeded the time limit by two minutes, a proceeding which was unfair, taking into account the fact that two games which had been previously claimed under similar circumstances had been ordered to be played out. So keen a form did their objection take that, although it was distinctly understood that Mr. Hoffer's decision had not been endorsed the Playing Committee, and that the matter was still to be considered by that committee, they intimated their intention of retiring from the tournament and for 35 minutes their clocks were going without a move having been made on the boards on which they were to play. Eventually however, they took the advice of gentlemen, who suggested that it was quite possible tbat the decision of the committee later in the day might be in accordance with their views of what should be done, and that if that were so their forfeiture of their chances in the tournament would have proved to be altogether unnecessary. They, therefore, agreed to wait until the decision of the committee was known before taking decided action, and took their seats at their boards, greatly to the gratification of all who are concerned for the successful carrying out of the tournament.>
