Indeed. In New In Chess, Timman gives a4 now, on move 49. He explains that this position had been studied before, with GM Mestel having published the drawing resource (the a-pawn move) in his 1981 book "Analysing the Endgame."

According to Timman, the position arose only once before this game, with reverse colors, in Nestorovic-Brkic, Sarajevo 2013. That game is not in this database, but it is here:

In that case, the defensive side did find the saving move and drew.
