PawnSac: Compare the position of black's rooks in the above diagrams.

Levon played 20..Kf8 (bringing the king toward the center in prep for the exchange of rooks) 21.Re8 Re8 22.ab5 ab5 23.Qf5 Bf5

Mickey on the other hand has in mind an improvement on Levon's play (or at least that was the plan). < Qf3 21. Kf3 Re6 22. ab5 ab5 23. Kg2 Rfe8 24. Re6 Re6 >

PawnSac: Caruana played 24.Bxd5 cd 25.Ra6 yielding black the 2 bishops but splitting the Q side pawns and initiating a very interesting attack on black's hanging D pawn.

Mickey's plan kept the LSB on d3, lifted the R to e6 guarding the Bd6 and intended to answer Ra8+ by bringing the K toward the center via the light squares h7, g6, etc

The question..
Is Mickey's position essentially sounder than Levon's ?

Jul-28-15  CountryGirl: Is the Marshall facing a serious challenge in this variation? Adams and Aronian are two of its highest level supporters and had serious trouble. One doesn't expect to see White the one with the two bishops in a Marshall ending!

PawnSac: Ironically, Stockfish 6 gives roughly +0.30 for white in both positions.

Well, I think whats happening is that the younger generation ( Caruana and MVL ) are just bringing some fresh ideas to the theory of the opening, so it will probably be a roller coaster for a few years until other strong players react to the lines with some "fresh" preparation for black. This is a typical sort of cycle with many openings and variations as they come in and out of fashion.

I guess that's the whole point, isn't it? to play unexpected as well as very good moves!

Jul-29-15  1850Patzer: I don't think you can count Aronian as a big exponent of anything anymore.

He's been on the decline since losing to Anand in the candidates.

Boris Gelfand has also been written off as a force in top-class play, then enjoyed a renaissance in his forties.

Aronian being aged 32 this year, the above remark seems premature, to put it mildly.

morfishine: Darn, I was hoping Adams was making a move for the top with his 118-move win. I guess he was out of gas as this game was not very Adams-like

I admire your reserve
