  fredthebear: Consider ALL possible Checks!

- Was that a legal move? If so, write it down.

- Am I in check now?

- If so, use the ABC checklist to respond to check: Away to safety, interpose Between, or Capture the checker?

- How can s/he put me in check on the next turn? Should I prevent that from happening now, or allow it to happen on the next turn? (It's often unwise to leave thy king on a checkable square.)

- Can I put her/him in check now?

- Is there a good follow-up to my check, such as giving more checks, perpetual check, a forked LPDO capture, or checkmate?

- Can I do something that allows me to put her/him in check on my next turn? Is it a worthwhile check?

- If there are no useful checks on the king, what about a "check" on the queen? Losing the queen without compensation is tantamount to a lost position.

- Consider ALL possible Captures, etc. etc.
