 | | offramp: <Absentee: <offramp: This is an easy win for Caruana. He is miles ahead.>
He's so far ahead he's come out from behind.> He has indeed come out from behind, LOL. My first assessment was wildly optimistic. I am much bleaker now. |

 | | offramp: White is aimomg for ♙a4. That will budge that ♘c4. |
Jan-31-16 | | Marmot PFL: Looks like either e6 or h5 about to fall. Tomashevsky using all his brain cells not to be the only player to go home without a win. |
Jan-31-16
 | | chancho: Carlsen rules....All the Trolls should acknowledge this piece of reality and go to smokey mountain, where they can hold each other's limp noodles and sing the blues... Haha. |
Jan-31-16 | | Marmot PFL: If 59...Kf7 your a4 plan looks very good. |
Jan-31-16 | | schpalotz: e5 looks good ev |
Jan-31-16 | | mike1: 59 ...e5 runs into 60. a4 |
Jan-31-16
 | | offramp: Tomashevsky points to his temple and exclaims, <"The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side.>" |
Jan-31-16 | | technical win: I'd call it a <technical win> |
Jan-31-16 | | Marmot PFL: <chanco> None of the candidates doing much here or Gibraltar. Anand lost to a unknown player, Giri fighting to draw with Hou, Caruana almost for sure losing this game, Karjakin not too impressive either. Nakamura playing it smart, couple wins and easy draws, and Aronian (hopefully) preparing for a good result. Though none of them would have much chance in a match with Carlsen at this point. Thought Caruana might at one time. |
Jan-31-16 | | Marmot PFL: Hou about to go to 3-0 vs Giri |
Jan-31-16
 | | chancho: Poor Giri that win against Carlsen means diddly squat if he has an 0-3 against Yifan Hou. |
Jan-31-16
 | | chancho: Crawl suckers.... CRAWL!!! King Magnus RULES!!! |
Jan-31-16
 | | offramp: I went to school with a guy called Tomashevsky. He was a nutter. |
Jan-31-16 | | fisayo123: Caruana playing the Nimzo Indian like he's never seen it in his life. |
Jan-31-16
 | | keypusher: Glad Tomashevsky got a win in this tournament. |
Jan-31-16 | | Absentee: <offramp: I went to school with a guy called Tomashevsky. He was a nutter.> Was it the same strawy guy who pointed at his head and showed he had no great affinity for mathematics? |
Jan-31-16 | | patzer2: White seems to have improved over 12. exd4= in the game S Popov vs V Jeremic, 2006 with 12. Ng5! . It's not in the chessgames.com database. Maybe it's a novelty.Black's 17...Rc4? appears to be a decisive error, which allows White a strong and near winning advantage after 18. Rbd1 to (+1.65 @ 21 depth). However, White might have punished 17...Rc4? even more strongly with the computer suggestion 18. Bxf6! gxf6 19. f4! Rc5 20. Nxd4 b5 21. b4 (+2.93 @ 21 depth, Deep Fritz 15). |

Jan-31-16
 | | Eyal: 11...cxd4 is probably just a bad move, as after 12.Nb5! Black is in immediate trouble because of the simple b4 threat. It seems that Caruana simply missed it, since he thought of his 12th move for more than 20 minutes (clock times can be seen here - https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-t...). Maybe he just assumed that White has to recapture on d4 and then after, say, 12.exd4 dxc4 13.Bxc4 Rc8 14.Qd3 Bxc3 15.bxc3 Nc7 Black has "normal" play against White's hanging pawns. |

Was it the same strawy guy who pointed at his head and showed he had no great affinity for mathematics?> I think it was him. |
Jan-31-16 | | john barleycorn: < offramp: ...
I think it was him.>
<offramp> your humour is different but very likeable. |
Jan-31-16 | | Marmot PFL: This is a tricky line for black as he always has to watch for b4, and giving up the c5 pawn doesn't make it any easier... |
Jan-31-16 | | activechess55: black's 6...ba5, always creates chance for white to trap the bishop with b4. it is always better to exchange at c3 in nimzo-indian. |
Jan-31-16 | | activechess55: although cudos to caruana for brave attempt to win with black pieces, in order to tie for 1st place. |
Feb-03-16 | | siamesedream: Carlsen on this game: <Caruana had won round 12 and could still catch me even if I drew, but after he made a mistake in the opening his opponent Tomashevsky played maybe his best game in the event and won quite convincingly.> http://www.arcticsec.no/index.php?b... |
