Nakamura playing it smart, couple wins and easy draws, and Aronian (hopefully) preparing for a good result. Though none of them would have much chance in a match with Carlsen at this point. Thought Caruana might at one time. |

Maybe it's a novelty.Black's 17...Rc4? appears to be a decisive error, which allows White a strong and near winning advantage after 18. Rbd1  to  (+1.65 @ 21 depth). However, White might have punished 17...Rc4? even more strongly with the computer suggestion 18. Bxf6! gxf6 19. f4! Rc5 20. Nxd4 b5 21. b4 (+2.93 @ 21 depth, Deep Fritz 15). |

It seems that Caruana simply missed it, since he thought of his 12th move for more than 20 minutes (clock times can be seen here - https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-t...). Maybe he just assumed that White has to recapture on d4 and then after, say, 12.exd4 dxc4 13.Bxc4 Rc8 14.Qd3 Bxc3 15.bxc3 Nc7 Black has "normal" play against White's hanging pawns. |
