Without cigars and all smoke around Anand is our Lasker, high technical level clever opening approach (Here i suspect MVL was waiting for a Berlin defence) and interest in other academic topics like Astronomy. Maxime is young thus I hope he will recover soon but Sinquefield Cup is of average of Candidates, one has to be totally fresh. |

 | | Eyal: Anand's opening play was terrible and his position was on the verge of collapse – the fact that MVL blundered with 30.Nxe6??, missing the nice intermediate shot 31…e3!, doesn't change that retroactively. As Robert Hess notes in his analysis of the game on chess.com, MVL may have missed his best attacking chances on moves 17-18 with f5! (before Anand played it himself, stabilizing the position somewhat). E.g., 17. f5 cxd4 (17... exf5? 18. a5 Qd6 19. Ne2 Kc8 20. Bf4 Qe7 21. O-O and Black’s position in shambles) 18. fxe6 Bxe6 19. Bxe6 Qxe6 20. Ne2 and Black's king will never find safety. For example, the attack rages on after 20... dxc3 21. Bf4+ Kc8 (21... Bd6 22. Nd4 wins material with Nb5+ coming) 22. Nxc3. In the game itself, MVL was apparently rattled by missing the 25…Qe7 resource, thinking that he should be winning with the forcing sequence leading to 25.b4. At any rate, instead of 30.Nxe6??, 30.Bxd5 exd5 31.Qh3 with the idea of transferring the queen to e3 and putting pressure along the g1-a7 diagonal still looks quite good for White. Seems by move 18 or so there can be a lot of open lines in this opening. But not in this game.
