Sep-05-16  GreenLantern: Good game by the Latvian Minister of Economics,

alexmagnus: I wonder what Hou would say if somebody told her a year ago that a she'll lose a tournament game to a high-ranking politician a year later :D
Premium Chessgames Member
alexmagnus: By the way, she is actually Minister of Finance, not Economics. She was Minister of Ecomonics before February of this year.

Another item for my collection of people who became notable enough to be relevant for Wikipedia in two independent fields. Actually first one in my collection where neither of the fields is longevity.

Sep-05-16  GreenLantern: I stand corrected. Thanks. I see the Wikipedia page I referred to was just updated. I should have used this:
Sep-05-16  kamagong24: super tactical! brave! unrelenting!
Sep-05-16  Shams: Very happy for this young woman who played the game of her life when it mattered most. I wonder if she was at all emboldened in her kingside pawn storm by the world champion's success a couple days earlier (Carlsen vs E Hossain, 2016) which featured this distantly similar position after White's 28th:

Sep-06-16  dehanne: When it rains, it pours.
Sep-06-16  nummerzwei: ChessBase gives '32...Nd8=', which is quite optimistic. The most you can say of Black's position is that it may not be objectively lost yet.

  cro777: A brilliant game by Reizniece-Ozola.

A thorough analysis of the game can be found in the Tournament Bulletin by Dylan Loeb McClain, editor-in-chief of

"In the women’s section, the shocker of the round, and of the tournament, was definitely Reizniece-Ozola’s win over Hou. Reizniece-Ozola played a magnificent game."

Sep-06-16  McChesser: This is a masterpiece.

HeMateMe: Ok, well done, but--don't give up the day job.

  OhioChessFan: "Ozola Partie"

An Englishman: Good Evening: I like to borrow the ancient Greek word "aristeia" (hope I spelled it correctly) for such a stunning, "lightning from a clear blue sky" achievement that occurs once and perhaps never again. Much like America's woman soccer player Lloyd scoring 3 goals in 15 minutes v. Japan in the World Cup Final.

For a handful of hours Dana Reizniece-Ozola was the greatest woman chess player in the world. Judging from her rating, that will never happen again--but she will always have that handful of hours. A handful of hours that almost every other human being will never experience.

cro777: "Great people are ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of determination!"

Dana Reizniece-Ozola thoughtful. It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you are capable to do with it.

FSR: Good pun, <OCF>, though it seems a tad risque coming from you. (I had to look up "Mazola Party.")

  al wazir: A more elegant ending would have been 49. Qxg7+ Nxg7 50. Ng5+ Kg6/Kg8 51. Rxg7+ Kxg7 52. Nxe6+ Kf6 53. Nxc5.
Dec-02-16  optimal play: "Yes Minister"

heh heh

One of the funniest comedies to come out of Britain!

Dec-02-16  scormus: Superb game by the Latvian, Something to saviour for the rest of her life.

I wonder if CG will feature a game by the young Theresa May. I don't imagine it would be quite this good though.

perfidious: As one line from 'Yes Minister' went:

<Very droll, Minister!>

Premium Chessgames Member
  rodchuck: 49. Qxg7 Nxg7 50. Ng5+ also looks quite convincing
Dec-02-16  amateur05: Awesome

Well I never liked it. I have heard it on the wireless. I don't like television. I do not like politics, either. I find it pointless. I think that in the future Dana Reizniece-Ozola will be remembered more for this game than for being Minister of Edducative Things in Lithuanis.

Dec-02-16  Herma48852: <al wazir A more elegant ending would have been 49. Qxg7+ Nxg7 50. Ng5+ Kg6/Kg8 51. Rxg7+ Kxg7 52. Nxe6+ Kf6 53. Nxc5>

Yes that is quite beautiful .. thanks!

Dec-02-16  rea: I once beat then-Oklahoma secretary of state John Rogers Jr. in a tournament game.

This was before his forced resignation on corruption charges.

If I recall correctly from all those years ago, he was rated in the 1600s
