Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-06-17  Mendrys: Nice game by Shankland. Black's minor pieces are a pathetic lot in the final position

Humorously, Stockfish gives the following line as even after 40. Ne5:

40...Nf6 41. Bg6 Qe7 42. Bf7+ Qxf7 43. Nxf7 Kxf7...=(0.0 @26 depth Stockfish-dd-modern)

It's only a partial line black's position doesn't get any better in the continuation though Stockfish insists it's even; however, after making the suggested move the evaluation goes to +10 for white.

I thought it may be a bug with the engine, it is a little old dating back to 2013, but found that Gull 3 and Rybka 64 both showed 40...Nf6 as the best move with the resulting position scored at 0.0 even though White is clearly very much better. Houdini scored the position correctly so it may be a bug with my Arena gui. Weird....

Apr-06-17  protonchess: @Mendrys, do you have endgame tablebases set up for the engines?

HeMateMe: why did Robbie sac the pawn on the a file? What was that meant to accomplish? an attack route for his rook?

40...Nf6 repeats a prior position, and maybe that confuses the engine. I've seen that kind of engine behavior before.

Hey, engine programmers! It's only a draw the third time the position repeats!

Apr-06-17  Mendrys: <protonchess: @Mendrys, do you have endgame tablebases set up for the engines?>

No tablebases configured. I think it's just an anomaly with my current set of old engines. Just curious if others see the same results with some of their engines. I don't think it's the GUI necessarily as the same engines configured in BabaChess showed the same flawed score of the position.
