Jun-23-17  syracrophy: This is another chapter of the "Missed combinations" anthology.

<<DISCLAIMER>: This is merely for artistic purposes since it was a Rapid game.>

Topalov had neat saving resource that was spotted by Tarjei Svensen, after 37...♖h6

Topalov refrained from playing the "normal" 38.♖xe8+, fearing perhaps the lack a good continuation after 38...♔f7. The tragic part of this is that there was not only ONE but <TWO(!!)> saving combinations with the theme of the 'desperado' Rook:

<1)> The <"traditional" 'desperado> (Rook check to decoy the King) consisted of 39.<Re7+ Kxe7 40.Qa3+> and the King has no shelter for the harrassment of the Queen.

<2)> The <artistic 'desperado'> was 39.Rh8!!

Suddenly, it holds back the mating threats on the h-file! This forces Black to take the perpetual with 39...<Rh1+/Rh2+ since 39...Qxh8>? 40.e6+ loses.

Jun-26-17  syracrophy: <CORRECTION OF TYPOS> While on a big hurry to leave the computer, I posted a brief text full of errors without giving a second thought - I just couldn't let pass the enthusiastic moment.

The use of 'desperado' Rook was bad employed. Correct would've been simply to say the theme was a <DECOY> sacrifice. And, (oh, my bad!), the last diagram had a small typo, which I would like to correct for the sake of the beautiful position arisen after <38.♖xe8+ ♔f7 39.♖h8!!>:

Or after the "normal" saving sac <39.♖e7+!>:

<White had the chance to sac the Rook on TWO different squares to draw!>
