In a fairly even position, Caruana played 17....Qe7 and was presumably shocked by 18.Bxb7!. The point is 18....Bd5+ 19.Kf1 Bxb7 20.Re1 and Black loses his queen. Quite an oversight for such a strong player, I guess, but it's surprising that White can get away with allowing all those discovered checks. (E.g. 18....Bf5+ 19.Nde4 Rb8 20.0-0! and Black can't take the bishop.)
