Jan-24-18 | | paavoh: <Very unsvidler-like> Indeed. Mix-up in the opening, maybe? I did not like 9.g3 as the Bishops would be restricted, why not simply 9. e3 or 9.h4 to prevent the pawn push? |
Jan-24-18 | | ndg2: White was totally dominated from an early stage on. Was this really the same Svidler who won the Russian super finals eight times? |

Jan-24-18 | | Marmot PFL: 9 e3 g5 10 Bg3 h5 doesn't look good, 9 h4 is interesting. 15 Qb3? is hard to explain. Threatens nothing and the queen is worse off then it was before. |

Jan-24-18 | | dehanne: 15.Qb5 looks okay |

 | | keypusher: Honestly, 9.g3 looks normal enough to me, and 9....g5 10.Be3 f5 seems like Black is being overaggressive. I guess not! There don't seem to be any games in the database with Svidler's 7.Qa4+, but there are a couple that continue 7.Rc1 Nc6 8.g3. 15.Qb3 was clearly bad, but overall my sense is that the punishment exceeded the crime. 20....Qg5 is brutal, threatening 21....Qg1+ 22.Rxg1 Rxg1#. I'm sure I wasn't the only person who thought of Seirawan vs Beliavsky, 1988 when they saw this. |

Jan-25-18 | | patzer2: Appears to me Black might have improved on 6...0-0 ⩲ in White's win in Svidler vs Yifan Hou, 2018 with the computer pick 6...Ne4 = in this game. |
Jan-25-18 | | patzer2: White's apparent novelty 7. Qa4+!? gives Black full equality or better after 7...Nf6 =. The popular move 7. Rc1 = to ⩲ as in White's win in A Moiseenko vs Yi Xu, 2016 might have been more prudent. However, 7. Qa4+!? wasn't where White's game went bad. Instead, what <keypusher> rightly observed to be a normal looking move with 9. g3? is punished by Black's surprise aggressive reply 9...g5! 10. Be3 f5 ⩱. Instead, 9. h4 Bf5 = (-0.01 @ 30 ply, Stockfish 8) appears to have been necessary. |
Jan-25-18 | | patzer2: The computer gives 15. Qb3? as the losing move, allowing 15...Na5 -+ (-2.62 @ 25 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, Black can put up more resistance in a bad position with <dehanne>'s 15. Qb5 a6 ∓ (-1.22 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 8) or the computer pick 15. h3 Rg8 ∓ (-1.14 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 8). |

Jan-25-18 | | ChessHigherCat: I usually flip the board and play with black when black won the game, but if you want to develop a serious persecution complex play through this game with white! I think Svidler just fell into a prepared line. It takes a computer to find the bad move and the attack was devastating. |
