"The Era" (February 23, 1862) listed the name of the opponent as <Segler>.

MissScarlett: I don't think we really need to know this, unless i)the alternative name is potentially amusing or ii)the poster is disputing the accuracy of the exisiting record.

It turned out to be the only new information from the <Quarterly for Chess History> article, apart from another contemporaneous source dating the <Jebson/Jetson> game 1892. I read your treatment of the dating of that game and figured the 1891 year was documented well enough.

I looked at the Gottfried Tegeler page and it looks to be a likely fit for the player from this game. At least you have found some provenance for his name/career.

That said, "The Era" is a contemporaneous source, so I thought it worth noting the "Segler" attribution here, if only because you may not have been aware of it yet.

MissScarlett: The <Quarterly> would more aptly be named the <Quarry for Chess History>. A great deal of material in need of filtering and refining.
