pdxjjb: Wow, Shankland's gonna hate himself if he post-analyzes this with a computer. He missed a clear win after 49 ... h5?

The right move is 50 Kd5!. I know this would have been a tough call because it allows the black king to enter white's position via f5, g4, but it turns out not to matter; this is a winning line for white.

If 50 ... kf5, 51 Kxc5 Ba7, 52 Kb5 whatever; and white can win with the passed pawn.

If 50 ... Ba7 to protect black's c-pawn, 51 Rg1 Kf5, 52 Nxg6; both white pawns are protected by the knight, and the rook can soon come up to g5 with crushing effect.

Jan-15-19  Fanques Fair: 50 Kd5 gave good winning chances, but the most annoying is that this is the most natural move in the position. Sometimes very good players donīt make natural moves unless it's certainly a win or at least it's not risky to lose.
Mar-10-19  Kirth Gersen: I think the fact that Kd5 looked playable and strong for White on several previous moves is the reason Sam missed it; it's not obvious that Black's 49...h5 made the idea that much stronger.
