fredthebear: Scandinavian Defense: Main Lines. Leonhardt Gambit (B01) 1-0.

FTB refers to this as the Center Counter Defense, Leonhardt Gambit. Emanuel Lasker played it as White in simultaneous exhibitions.

OhioChessFan: Lasker had a pretty positive view of Black's first move in his Manual of Chess.

Phony Benoni: Old FOgey speaking up here. You're going to have to explain this one to me.

Did like the game, though. Tried that gambit myself once.

OhioChessFan: Win Ben Stein's Money...thanks, folks. Tip your waitstaff on your way out.
Dec-20-19  TheTamale: This is one of those puns that are so ridiculous that they're outstanding.

thegoodanarchist: Now THAT is a damn fine pun!
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: <Tamale>, yep, exactly what I thought.
Dec-20-19  spingo: I’m probably one of the few non-USoids who understands this pun. I used to really like this difficult quiz show. It was almost as good as Jeopardy.

Ben Stein is a great character. He was President Nixon’s scriptwriter and he played the teacher Bjorn Amundsen in The Wonder Years.

Dec-20-19  goodevans: Two ways to look at why black lost here. Either...

<He took the wrong knight>. 14...Nxe4 would have led to tremendous complications but it looks as though black comes out OK.

<He took the right knight but at the wrong time>. He had two earlier opportunities to play ...Nxe4 and again both look as though black comes out OK.

  Breunor: Losing move is 13 ... c5:

1) +2.38 (26 ply) 14.Nb5 Qa5 15.Ra3 Qd8 16.Nxd7 Bxd7 17.Bxf6 Bxf6 18.Bxh7+ Kh8 19.Qh5 Bg5 20.Be4+ Bh6 21.Nd6 f5 22.Bxb7 Be8 23.Qh3 Qxd6 24.Bxa8 Qxd4 25.Rxa7 Kg8 26.Qd3 Qb4 27.c3 Qb6 28.Ra6 Bb5 29.Rxb6 Bxd3

Dec-20-19  goodevans: <Breunor: Losing move is 13 ... c5>

Is that true? The thing is that white didn't actually play either of the top computer moves you give (+2.38 (26 ply) 14.Nb5 or +2.28 (26 ply) 14.Bxh7+).

White played 14.Ne4. Is black still losing after this or does 14...Nxe4 save the day? If so then the actual losing move was 14...Nxe5?

Dec-21-19  ASchultz: This GotD's pun is as Ferris can be.

(waits for reaction)

Anybody? ... Anybody?

Dec-21-19  nalinw: Well one can always check with the engine.

It says that

14. .. Nxe5 was the losing move

14. .. Nxe4 instead is the top choice - with only a small edge to White
