cro777: This was the second blitz game of the Fourth Round of the FIDE World Cup 2019. Xiong won and advanced to the next stage.

Some experts believe that the Four Pawns Attack is the most principled line against the Alekhine’s Defence. "I feel that the reason you see the Modern variation with 4.Nf3 more often is simply because the Alekhine’s Defence is often a surprise opening, and White would rather play a simpler variation." (GM Ashwin Jayaram)

In a Four Pawns Attack Duda chose Trifunovic variation 5...Bf5 (the main line is 5…dxe5).

Xiong: "I had a very good position at one point, but I think he blundered somewhere. I think it still was very unclear before that."

24…Rd1+? This was the decisive mistake. Correct was the premilinary 24…Qc5+! to force the white bishop to leave the h6-square: 25.Be3 Rd1+ 26.Kf2 Qf8+!

In positions like this, never, ever, give up the e4-square. Here Duda played 15....Bg4 and was immediately in a world of hurt.

I made a different flavor of the same mistake once.
