Check It Out: Alexey Sarana has been on an impressive roll this past year. I hope he gives Magnus a good run here.

Oct-11-19  Pedro Fernandez: 1.e4!, no chance with 1.d4. Hope the kid learns a lot from the WC.

That looks level to me. Black has an outside passed pawn but White can immediately get behind it by 30. Rd8+ Bf8 31. Ra8.

Oct-11-19  devere: 30.Rd8+ Bf8 31.Nf6+ Kg7 32.Nh5+ Kg8 33.Nf6+ forces a draw, and against the World Champion that's what I would do. But Sarana intends to beat him, and you know how that might end.
Oct-11-19  LameJokes:

What is white doing? play h5, nf6 and threaten h6 winning the bishop. Black can't take away the bishop from f8, since Rg8 mates?

Oct-11-19  LameJokes: of course, I mean Nf6 first then h5.
Oct-11-19  LameJokes: 36.nf6 kg7 37.h5 h6 38.gh6 kf6 39.rf8 kg7 catches the h6 pawn.
Oct-11-19  beenthere240: ...h6 appears forced
Oct-11-19  ewan14: Exciting
Oct-11-19  spingo: MC played 39...Ba3.

This gives up the h6 pawn.

This game might go into one of those dreaded R and minor piece v R endings. If Carlsen has the R + B he has been known to win endings like that.

Oct-11-19  Gypsy: Surely Carlson is playing for a draw in this position, does not he?

I mean, he seems to be close to that, but his position is somewhat worse. He can win this only is White makes a serious blunder, or two.

Oct-11-19  ewan14: Nice , nice !
Oct-11-19  spingo: Black played 45...a3.

He could have taken the h-pawn, but then he would have been checkmated.

Oct-11-19  devere: A nice effort by 19 year old Alexey Sarana to press the World Champion and force him to work for a draw. It's only round 2 and I am already liking this format that gives many more players a chance to advance.
Oct-11-19  Pedro Fernandez: Good post <Devere>, greetings.
Oct-11-19  Nov8: Better than So's Giri
Oct-12-19  starry2013: It's not always easy in the computer age when you against prep as black, Carlsen needs to take risks to win in some circumstances but it can be too dangerous. It's remarkable he has the rating he has considering the impact of computers.

saffuna: Analysis from Daniel King: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p31...

Carlsen had to come up with some great stuff just to hold the draw.
