Now, despite the obstacles, Black manages to check the white king with the rook on b8 in only 7 half-moves:

(I have a feeling the last move was 31...Rxg8+, not ...Kxg8. I could be wrong.)

May-18-20  jnpope: Original source gives "K takes Q", but ...Rxg8+ is decisive. I'll keep an eye open for additional sources to see if the NY Times printed the ending incorrectly.
