Phony Benoni: The score is printed in the "Montreal Gazette" (November 14, 1893) as part of an account of Steinitz's first exhibitions in Montreal ont he previous day. The game was part of a 16-board simul (Stinitz scoring +15 -1), played in the evening at the Montreal Chess Club.

The score given in the Gazette is quite bad, with many obvious mistakes. This reconstruction seems reasonable, even 31...Be6. . Black was probably lost anyway, and it was just possible after the piece sacrifice that White might miss the threat of 33...Rxg3+.

The account concluded with:

<"Mr. Steinitz, after this game was over, said he had hardly ever been pressed so hard by so young a player, and he had great hopes for his future. Mr. Marshall is only 16 years old.">

Perhaps Steinitz was prescient. or, like most professional simul-givers, he no doubt understood that flattery was the surest road to a return engagement.
