offramp: Game 5, and this was Harsen Darwin Smith 's first win. He was losing 3-0. How many games had been drawn? You have 15 seconds.

Black, Otho Michaelis, played well to reach a position with large attacking potential.

He ended up investing all that energy in a stupid attempt to construct this beginners mating position:

16...c6 was too slow. A very strong idea, suggested by Stockfish 11 no less, is
16...h5! That is rated as +3.

It's a natural move. Natural selection, in fact.

After this first win Harsen Darwin Smith felt a surge of sap rising in his loins. Only those who, like Roderick Usher, are enfeebled of all sensation, will be immune from the curiosity of the course that the match subsequently took.

scutigera: <a surge of sap rising in his loins>: I think it's only called that in trees, even if it does flow through wood.
