savage sanctuary: I find VK's record in the Sicilian astonishing... out of 379 database games in the blk/wht side, he only lost 45 times.

The last time he lost a miniature on the wht side was 15 yrs ago...

Kramnik vs Topalov, 2005

Kramnik vs F Vallejo Pons, 2005

And as blk he's only lost one miniature in his career with the Sicilian...

Kasparov vs Kramnik, 1992

OhioChessFan: Will someone tell Kramnik to quit playing these patzeresque Pawn moves against Carlsen? This is painful.

HeMateMe: 20...B-h4+ gains a tempo, keeps a second white rook from entering the game. Nice planning from MC.

savage sanctuary: What on earth is the purpose of 17.Nd5? Was he afraid of ...Nxb3 and ...d5?

17.Qg2 followed by 0-0-0 and all is well Vlad

Jul-30-20  Ulhumbrus: One alternative to 17 Nd5 is 17 Qd2 getting ready to sacrifice the queen's bishop on h6
Jul-30-20  MordimerChess: Nd5 is a known move in the position, it was even played before but with rook still on a8 and after b4. White simply won the pawn and the game soon after. But in this position... ouch...

Kramnik, late in his career, seems to get into a mood where he wants to play interesting chess. Unbalanced, unclear, mostly attacking chess. But I think sometimes in a pressure event against top players, he pushes it too far. Into clearly unsound territory. Maybe it's from the stress, maybe from being too optimistic. Think a good example was the last candidates he was in. Maybe this tournament also.

Yeah, 17. Nd5 was unnecessary. But it does provide interesting chess. But following it up with 19. Bxh6 was just ridiculous.

You could make a case that something like 19. gxf7+ Rxf7 20. Bxf7+ Qxf7 21. Qg2 Be6 22. b3 Rf8 23. Rg1 has some merit. A rook and pawn for the two pieces and can make an argument that there is a slight bind and decent pressure on black's king. Still worse but there is still play left. In fact, if the rooks were connected or had a tempo or two white actually might've had something.

Shame that Kramnik's prone for bouts of interesting but clearly unsound play. As shown in the 2019 world blitz, if he better balances his solid positional chess with his desire for interesting chess, he can still put up some world class results.

Jul-30-20  boz: The whole game smelled strongly of coffee-house. Speculative sacrifices are the last refuge of the aged who are too lazy to calculate.

I hear you. Maybe he doesn't have that "fire in his belly" anymore. Kramnik played 37 games, only 2 victories with white, and walked away with $8,000 US. How "legendary" of him.

Aug-02-20  NARC: I think 14. Nd5 followed by 15. a4 looks interesting.

Thatís not bad, but Carlsen has been doing extremely well the last dozen years. With black in classical games he has scored +18-2=43 with the Sicilian since 2009. Thatís 3% losses with black compared to Kramnikís 12% with both colours.
