perfidious: A line with rather less value than another second move Nakamura has tried in 2.Qh5.

fredthebear: 2.Ke2? is losing. Castling rights have been lost. 11.Ke1 was necessary to develop the Bf1, which undeveloped on 16.Bf1? Truly awful chess conceptually. Nakamura had better start taking Xiong seriously.

Black played a somewhat passive double fianchetto defense. He should have brought out the bishops in a classical double king pawn manner, then ripped open the center to catch the dawdling White king. Still, Black is winning throughout until 25...Qf5? Then Black proceeds to give away both bishops in ludicrous fashion, and develop White's Rh1 for him.

This is easily the worst game between GMs that I've seen in a long while. Did the fans throw their drinks and popcorn into the ring, showering the combatants with boos?

Dec-27-20  souledgar: @fredthebear 2.Ke2 is known to Nakamura fans as the Bongcloud. I see it as a new style of play, especially in modern chess, a psychological attack to throw the opponent off balance, especially in shorter time controls like rapid, blitz and bullet in which Nakamura is most comfortable with.

In faster games with the pressure of time, apparently ridiculous moves like these can destabilize the opponent's mindset, make them think longer and create opportunities later that can be exploited by a less theoretical and intuitive player like Hikaru Nakamura. The fans didn't boo him, they cheered his audacity.

Magnus Carlsen did the same thing when he took six whole turns to reverse the positions of his King and Queen in a game versus Andrew Tang in bullet back in 2018.

Dec-27-20  RandomVisitor: As <fredthebear> points out, black was winning until move 25
