An Englishman: Good Evening: Played against the Saemisch Variation of the NID a lot in my time, but never saw anything like this. After 12...Qd7 one expects the usual ...Qd7-a4 followed by something captures on c4 while White presses on the King side, but 14...g5--even by Carlsen's standards quite an amazing pawn sacrifice.
Mar-22-21  Ulhumbrus: As 16 Nxg5 can be answered with 16...Nf4 this suggests 16 Bxg5 instead.

If the game had continued 16. Bxg5 <Nxg3>, what would that suggest?
Mar-23-21  Ulhumbrus: <beatgiant: <Ulhumbrus> If the game had continued 16. Bxg5 <Nxg3>, what would that suggest?> That would have suggested 16 Nxg5 in which case you could have asked what 16...Nf4 would have suggested. If neither capture is satisfactory this suggests that the move 14...g5 counts as a threat. If 14 g3 is not satisfactory on alternative is 14 Bg3. If that is not satisfactory either, that suggests that the move 13...Nh5 counts as a threat and we must seek an alternative earlier. One example of an earlier alternative is 13 Bxf6.

Really? Resulting in a half-open g file which may be put to good use after O-O-O by Black. Extending your logic further, perhaps 1.d4 was a wrong choice ;-)

Apr-07-21  tonsillolith: I felt uncomfortable with Black's opening (double edged knights, inviting messy pawn structure, etc) but the only conclusion I can really draw from this game is:

So was thoroughly beaten here. Not allowed to put up a fight.

OhioChessFan: It's amazing how often Carlsen crushes the elites and makes it look like he's playing someone 400 points lower.
