Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-18-21  Ulhumbrus: It is possible that Carana plays 10 Ne3 in anticipation of the moves...e4 and ...d5 on the part of Shankland, in the event of which the blockading knight will have a target on d5. The other knight will come to support it vi e1 and c2.

One objection to 13..e4 is that on e5 the pawn obstructs White's queen's bishop. Whether 13...e4 leads to a king side attack by ...f5 and ...f4 remains to be seen.

After 19 Bf4 Whte's dark squared bishop is in play while Black's dark squared bishop is obstructed by his d4 pawn.

If on 27...Ndf5 the Black king is going to find himself short of flight squares after 28 Ng4 one alternative is to start chopping some wood first by 27...Rxf2

28...h5 he hopes to chase the knight away but 29 Qg5!! offers it as a sacrifice.

After 31 Qh6 Black's rook on f7 is tied to the defence of the knight on g7. If Black tries to free it by 31...Nc6 on 32 Bxg7 the rook on f7 is pinned to its colleague on f8. The move 31...Nef5 looks like an act of desperation.

Aug-18-21  Ulhumbrus: I my previous message the words <The other knight will come to support it vi e1 and c2.> should read <The other knight will come to support it <via> e1 and c2.>

fredthebear: Always good to see your posts <Ulhumbrus>. Keep 'em coming!

In the final position, 38...QxBf3 is out of the question, as it would allow 39.QxNg7#. Furthermore, the Black queen is overworked trying to protect both Black minor pieces, which are both threatened by the White queen. What's more the Black Ng7 is pinned to the h8-mating square. White is threatening to play 39.BxNg7, which would then threaten checkmate in the corner. Black cannot improve his defense.

Excellent posts, gentlemen. Very instructive to see Caruana (often regularly) do this to a 2700+. I can only say if I were his opponent I would be very scared.

Aug-19-21  sp12: 31...a6 would have given some escape opportunities for black?

On 31...a6, White has <32. Qxg7+> Rxg7 33. Rxf8+ Kh7 34. Kf2 Ng8 35. Rh1+ Nh6 36. g5 Rf7+ 37. Rxf7 Qxf7+ 38. Bf6, and it looks like the threat down the h-file is winning.
