ChessHigherCat: Yeah, but I saw you trying to dance those steps on American Bandstand and believe me, you suck!
Jul-26-22  goodevans: Incredible that <CHC>'s first comment has spawned so much debate about political correctness and absolutely none about his patently ludicrous claim that the pun is somehow "clever"!
Jul-26-22  Cassandro: I think the pun is OK. <ChessHigherCat>'s attempt to bring political correctness into the discussion is rather misguided. Today's PC culture is an important topic, but I don't think <CHC> understands the concept very well. One should at least have a firm grasp of the concept before initiating such a debate.

ChessHigherCat: <goodevams> The pun is clever because "fish" means a weak player (the loser in this case) and "a fish called Awonder" is very close to the film title "A Fish called Wanda". I just commented that the film would not make it past the film board these days for mainstream cinema because it's not PC., and it "sparked debate" by somebody who agrees explicitly with me about the movie but is is laboring under the misconception that "not-PC" is a criticism. You probably just don't like the author, and I didn't know who it was when I praised it but it doesn't alter the fact it's a clever pun, especially compared with the extremely low bar set by most of the puns.

' <Cassandro> Yet another totally vacuuous carping criticism full of sound and fury and signifying nothing. I was forced to give a definition of "PC" to someone who didn't even know what it meant and gave a good one supported by the definition in Wiki.If you have a valid critiicism (which would be a first!), point out what's wrong with my definition instead of making some baseless claim about how misguided it is. I saw your level of argument when you quoted my pun "It was fireworks but now it's gone stale, mate" by deliberately blanking out the whole first half that made it original and meaningful in context and then claiming it's stale. But all is forgiven because you reminded me to put you on ignore. You never say anything interesting or funny or even mildly amusing anyway.

Jul-26-22  Cassandro: <CHC> I meant no offense. And you're right; at least you gave us a definition of political correctness, although not a particularly good one.
Jul-26-22  Cassandro: Here is a better definition:

<Political correctness (PC) refers to language that avoids offending persons of various genders, races, sexual orientations, cultures, or social conditions.>

It is an improvement over <CHC>'s attempt, because it is more to the point and lists various groups that are most relevant to the argument.

tamar: Certainly Artemiev, one of the kindest grandmasters, would never call a junior player a fish. The pun is more like a pot shot at Awonder for no reason. He is outrated by 130 pts.
Jul-26-22  goodevans: <ChessHigherCat: <goodevams> The pun is clever because...>

You're doing that infuriating thing that my wife often does of explaining in great detail the absolutely ruddy obvious because I happen to have a different opinion. If only I could understand then...

  Teyss: <goodevans> Let's create a club ;-)

Gents, please, could we at least agree that for some PC is acceptable and for others it's pejorative, like so many other loaded words (won't mention any to avoid triggering another debate)?

Anyhow White's decisive mistake seems to be 18.f4? leading to the N sacrifice. Don't know if 24.e5 is also a mistake because the position is already very difficult to defend. If White accepts the second sacrifice with 25.fxe5 Rxe5 26.Rxe5 Rxe5, he has to give up material to avoid mate.

I'll explain something else to you that should be obvious: it's insulting to say that my opinion that the pun is clever is a "patently ludicrous claim". And then you say that what I'm doing is simply maddening because I defemd myself against your personal attack by showing how it's clever. Sounds like you need a good shrink and/or marriage counselor but leave me out of it, I can like whatever I like and my opinion is not patently ludicrous because it doesn't coincide with yours. I feel like I'm touring an insane asylum

MissScarlett: Credit, well, some, for this minor masterpiece must go to <sneaky pete>: W Zartobliwy vs K Wojtyla, 1947 (kibitz #23)
Jul-26-22  Brenin: Yes, but what did you think of the game, Mrs Lincoln? I find it amazing that so much time and energy are expended on a culture war motivated by the status of a film, the title of which is the basis for a rather weak pun. Is <CG>'s GOTD really the place for such a discussion?

If it's taboo to explain a joke there's probably no point in my trying to explain to you what a joke you are. I seriously recommend that you check out your local hardware stores for remedies for dry rot. That's even stupider than your comment accusing me of being a fascist for banning people because I explained how to use the "ignore" function to avoid banning people.

Here you cite a definition that's virtually identical to the first sentence of the Wikipedia definition I quoted while claiming it's superior because it omits the essential part of the definition, namely the second sentence of the wiki definition I quoted which is obviuosly beyond your grasp: <In public discourse and the media, the term is generally used as a pejorative with an implication that these policies are excessive or unwarranted.> I''m trying to figure out what planet you come form to ignore the ironic usage of PC, which is by far the most common. Then the fact that no native speakers corroborate that the term is mainly used ironically is a convincing argument for reading something interesting instead of wasting my time trying to talk reason with you.

MissScarlett: Less a culture war, more a pissing match. My money's on <CHC>. <goodevans>, unable to rely on Stockfish, took refuge in <Cassandro>.
Jul-26-22  goodevans: Oh, how truly stupid we all have been. We forgot the golden rule: 'Don't feed the witch'!

She must be truly bloated on the feast we've laid out before her today. Then again, maybe just one more wafer-thin mint will do the trick.

All that remains to be said is <Until tmoz!>

Jul-26-22  moodini: I was just wondering if anybody had an opinion about the pun, or perhaps the film on which it is based? If so, I sincerely hope that they won't be too shy to share it.
Jul-26-22  stone free or die: <Ding Dong!> ...

It's awonder to behold.

I like the immediate run to cover behind <sneaky pete>:

W Zartobliwy vs K Wojtyla, 1947 (kibitz #23)

Which is just another <missy> post ... ?!?

<sneaky pete> does have a <A Fish called Wanda> game in a collection - for a player that has but the one loss on <CG>.

Wanda may or may not be a fish, but Awonder certainly isn't one - not even 20, and has a current FIDE rating of 2625!

OTOH- I can see how a name like Awonder is irresistible for an irascible.

The pun is good for the word play, but bad for calling a player a fish (a bit of a chess insult, and as I said, a bit of a stretch for this player).

The movie is recommended, though I haven't seen it in a long time. It's a bit stupid humor, with some Monty Python people in it (and Jamie Curtis iirc).

And a fish called Wanda.

Yes, well, his post existed at one point. Rumour ascribes me the power to delete posts, but that's not my style.
