Nov-23-21 | | Brenin: 36 ... Be3+ 37 Qxe3 Qh5+ 38 Kf4 Qf5#, all forced. Much easier than yesterday's POTD! |

 | | drollere: since the white Q guards h5, i had 36. .. Be3+. if 37. Qxe3 Qh5+, 38. Kf4 Qf5# ... if 37. Kg4 Qh5#. |

Nov-23-21 | | mel gibson: <Brenin: 36 ... Be3+ 37 Qxe3 Qh5+ 38 Kf4 Qf5#, all forced. Much easier than yesterday's POTD!> Yes - I saw the whole sequence in under 3 seconds. |

 | | NMABQjmgChess: Easier for me than yesterday as others have noted. |
Nov-23-21 | | Hercdon: i fourth the motion that this puzzle was sooo much easier than yesterdays |
Nov-23-21 | | TheTamale: I spent five minutes on the Monday puzzle and didn't get it, but I got this in about five seconds. There is just a randomness to the way the inferior brain works that is both terrible and beautiful. |
Nov-23-21 | | saturn2: But 37.Qxe3 is not forced. There is
37.Kg4 Qh5 ++ |
Nov-23-21
 | | raymondhow: I fifth that notion, much more straightforward than yesterday. |
Nov-23-21 | | landshark: Saw this one virtually at a glance.
Copy on most of the comments so far about its difficulty or lack thereof - |

 | | agb2002: Black has a bishop and two pawns for a knight.
The white queen controls h5. Hence, 36... Be3+ 37.Qxe3 (37.Kg4 (Q)h5#) 37... Qh5+ 38.Kf4 Qf5#. |
Nov-23-21 | | gawain: Solved this right away. A nice example of a swallowtail mate. |
Nov-23-21 | | murkia: TGI Monday! |
Nov-23-21 | | TheaN: This is a rather obvious take-out-the-defender. Now I'm interested in yesterday's as I didn't see it. |
Nov-23-21 | | parch: Have 36...Be3+ 37.Q:e3
(37.Kg4 Qh5# )
37...Qh5+ 38.Kf4 Qf5# |

 | | Dionysius1: Not just a <take out the defender> . Also <use an opponent-piece to deprive his King of an escape square> (e3) |
Nov-23-21 | | paavoh: Not too difficult but still a pleasing finish, White Q blocking the escape. |
Nov-23-21
 | | Oxspawn: Mated by the black pieces with strong support by the white queen.
36. .....Be3+ 37. Qxe3 Qh5+ 38. Kf4 Qf5#
or
36...Be3+ 37. Kg4 Qh5# |
Nov-23-21
 | | Oxspawn: Just to add that there are no complaints here about being too easy. I love any POTD I can understand. |
Nov-23-21 | | TheaN: <Dionysius1: Not just a <take out the defender> . Also <use an opponent-piece to deprive his King of an escape square> (e3)> Interesting take, but imo, no. The point being, Black was already taking out e3 by the bishop. The only consequence is that by being taken on e3, h5 is free for the queen and the mate follows. Ie, if White were to not capture on move 37, 36....Qh5+ 37.Kf4 Qf5# just as much. <mg & Hercdon> cheers, but I found it after posting via PB's PotD collection :> |
Nov-23-21 | | johnnydeep: Easy-peasy. Much more so than yesterday. |

 | | Dionysius1: That's a fine distinction <TheaN>. I prefer my take, because it is a useful learning illustration of the restrictions a King can face and how dynamically to create them, while containing enough truth to not be misleading. Thank you for your comment though. |
