Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-05-22  goodevans: A nice win by one of the last minute substitutes.

26...Kg7 was a pawn sac for which Black never really got sufficient compensation thanks to Wojtaszek's accurate defence.

Feb-05-22  whiteshark: Richard Rapport's task seemed to have got easier when Ding Liren withdrew, but his replacement Radek Wojtaszek starts by winning their game!
Feb-05-22  whiteshark: Wojtaszek said he’d missed was <38.Rc2! Rb8 39.Rc4>, and when rooks were exchanged the knight ending was very tough to hold. The computer suggests a well-timed f5-break might have helped, but in the end Wojtaszek went on to win very smoothly.

  saffuna: 18. Bf1.

I would never even consider taking a bishop like that off the long diagonal, especially with the black bishop plus queen looking down it as well. But it was the best move.

Check It Out: I don't understand why 18.Bf1 was the best move. Indirect pressure on b5?

HeMateMe: doesn't 18. B-f1 just lose a pawn and create a permanent weakness in white's kingside?

  saffuna: No. After 18...Bxf3 19 ezf3 Qxf3 20 a4 gives whit a passed b-pawn.
