Feb-06-22  0ZeR0: It feels great to see Nakamura playing classical chess again.
Feb-06-22  fabelhaft: Yes, nice to see Nakamura in a classical event, and this win should feel especially good for him. When he received the wild card there were considerable discussion concerning that he didn’t deserve it and that Esipenko (who also got in eventually) should have been given it instead, for example here:

Feb-06-22  Ulhumbrus: After 33...Qxa3 Black has passed b pawns and in a queen and pawn ending passed pawns are more important than the numerical pawn superiority.

However with 34 Kf2!! the white king enters the square of Black's passed b pawn and now White is playing with an extra king with respect to Black's passed b pawn.

This continues to be the case after 37 Ke2.

This looks like a lesson in the art of evaluation.

Feb-06-22  thebully99: Man with Worst Record against Carlsen vs Man with Best Record Against Carlsen (as of today, the only Super GM with a plus score).

takebackok: After 11... bishop X b4?! 12 axb4 dxc3 13 dxc3 re8, white has open board two bishops. Not the kind of position you want against the H bomb!

ajk68: 24. b5 is beautiful board vision. He has to see the rook moves to clear the 4th rank, exchanging rooks without loss of tempo, the temporary loss of the bishop (and that it must be accepted), the intervening check and how all the escapes squares for the king are no good, deflecting the queen off the diagonal by exchanging the second pair of rooks, the check on the diagonal once the queen has moved, and winning the bishop back (10 moves in to the sequence).

and the more vanilla line in which black moves 27...Qf8, still going down a pawn with an absolutely terrible position.
