Interestingly, the <NN> in this game is only a partial <NN>.

In the Wiener Schachzeitung (Jan 1901), p.16, his name is listed as <S.A. ....r>. https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

Can anyone shed light on the full name of this player? Presumably the initials of his first two names are "S.A." and his last name ends in the letter "r".

Apr-07-22  Z free or die: <JFQ> thanks for the helpful link.

I read it was either <S. A. ....r> or as <S. A.....r>.

(Don't know if I counted the periods exactly right, but you get the idea)

I have an old list of <CG> players, and tried to find a match - to no avail.

I also looked at this page from the same issue:

https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

It's an xtab from a <Wiener Schach-Club> amateur tournament. Since the Janowski game was located there it seemed natural to look at club members, and this is about as good as I could do presently. No candidate seems to be there, unfortunately.

Even if there was, it would be rather speculative, won't you agree? I wouldn't hold out much hope unless you found a 2nd source explicitly mentioning this game, and the player.

But one never knows, do one?!

The only candidate with this abbreviation would be <S. Auspitzer> at that time a member of the Vienna Chess Club. The WSZ gives Siegfried and also 'Sigmund Auspitzer' (WSZ 1900, p. 41).

fredthebear: If 19...gxNh6, then 20.Qxe6+ K moves 21.QxBe7, etc. and the White queen is threating a Damiano's mate supported by the pawn.

The actual game continuation was a neat finish to watch unfold as White had to create his own points of penetration without an open file.

Of course, one must take action to make their positive mind's eye come to fruition. Don't over think it, don't just wait for it to happen -- actively pursue your desire w/dogged determination and a sense of timing.
